1963 airstream 22ft Safari
Exterior original and not polished. Interior “RETRO”, completely modified from floor joists up into a Master/Guest Bed & Bathroom Suite with PVC plumbing. No D/C wiring or holding tanks. Located at sea level in Florida’s Big Bend Area, it was only moved in and out of town during storm surge danger. Little done to exterior; focus was on interior. No heat or AC. We used a small electric heater in winter. Stored undercover every summer. FEATURES: 8 Ply trailer tires w/less than 200 miles. Highest grade marine plywood floor is painted and covered with carpet sections. Paneled with New England butternut machined lumber including queen size butternut bed with drawers and storage compartments underneath. His & her rheostat adjustable reading lights over headboard area. His & her air pressure controllers for queen air mattress. Original, whimsical Airstream artwork on wall storage cabinet above bed headboard. Butternut closet lined with thick southern red cedar and interior light. Two secret storage areas in closet floor. Built-in butternut chest of drawers. Enclosed storage area opposite bureau, high on butternut wall. Butternut bench in front of FULL SIZE shower. Bench top removable to access electrical panel box with one 50 amp double-pole breaker, and two single-pole 20 amp breaker. Room in panel box for more breakers. Four A/C outlets. Sink set in wide one-piece-butternut board with cabinets below. On demand electric water heater under sink which explains the 50 amp requirement. Camper is plumbed entirely with conventional PVC with three simple valves underneath to drain for cold weather. There is a foot-flush camper toilet and several cubbyholes to one sideā¦.The Negative: original exterior has received little attention and looks “old” which it is. Rear bumper has some rust and small holes. A couple of the original window cranks are mostly stripped and need attention or require two people (one inside and one outside) to completely close. The shower has a single hand/lever control. I should have installed two separate handles instead to temper an even hot water temperature like I did in the sink. For the shower we crack the hot water faucet in the sink and this completely tempers the shower. Curtains are now getting old and should be replaced. Roof vents are fixed.
